One rocket, four satellites! Long March 2D successfully launched carrying four satellites all for commercial use

Release time:
2023/06/08 15:35

At 18:50 (Beijing Time) on March 30, 2023 a Long March 2D carrier rocket blasted off from the Taiyuan Satellite Launch Center, successfully deployed 4 satellites of the PIESAT-1 constellation into the preset orbit.

The launch mission was carried out by the Long March 2D carrier rocket, a two-stage carrier rocket with liquid propellant of normal temperature developed by Shanghai Academy of Spaceflight Technology (SAST). It has a take-off thrust of up to 300 tons, which corresponds to 1.3 tons of carrying capacity at the sun-synchronous circular orbit with an altitude of 700 kilometers, and it can meet the requirements of launching one single satellite and multiple satellites into different orbits. The PIESAT-1 constellation was developed by Yinhe Hangtian (Beijing) Internet Technology Co., Ltd. for PIESAT Information Technology Co., Ltd.

The “gold medal rocket” Long March 2D carrier rocket has successfully completed two launch missions in January 2023, set a great opening up for SAST in the new year. It is the first launch mission of Long March 2D after the Spring Festival, and the Development Team is ready to meet the tight and high frequency launch schedule with full spirit.

Optimize operating process, and guarantee to meet the nodes. Facing dual pressures of high launch frequency and limited development time, the team has been steadily proceeding the de-model and de-mission-specialized efforts of Long March 2D carrier rocket, and efficiently shortened the development process of the whole rocket. At this launch, the Stage 1 and Stage 2 rocket body marks the first flight of Long March 2D after adopting de-mission-specialized general status. By optimizing the final assembly and final testing of the whole rocket, as well as the operating process at the launch site, the work cycle has been further shortened from delivery of engine, rocket leaving the factory, delivery of satellite at the launch site, to the final launch, which guaranteed the successful execution of the mission.

Ingenious design and new layout. To meet the 4-satellite layout demand, this launch has  adopted the split level parallel layout in the first time, which has significantly increased the space efficiency within the fairing. Meanwhile, to guarantee rationality of the design, the model has also implemented multiple iterations of optimization in terms of kinetic dynamics, integrated operation of satellite and rocket, and separation safety, to ensure that the satellite can enter into the orbit safely.

It is the 10th commercial launch of Long March 2D carrier rocket at the whole rocket level. Long March 2D carrier rocket has long been favored by commercial customers because of its reliable product performance and high-quality launch service, provide strong power for the fast development of China’s commercial space industry.

It’s the 75th launch of the Long March 2D carrier rocket, the 184th flight experiment of the Long March series carrier rockets developed by Shanghai Academy of Spaceflight Technology, as well as the 469th launch of the Long March series carrier rockets.
